L'elefante è buono, lavora e non protesta, ha grande dignità e non china mai la testa: udito perfetto, ricorda che gli hai fatto, accetta la fatica solo in cambio del rispetto. Intelligente - come certa gente sogna - lavora senza fare mai una rogna. Giusto che il lavoro renda liberi per lui resta un mistero: lui, che libero lo è stato per davvero.

La folla scoppia a ridere, c'è chi non ci vuol credere: tremila mani battere non sembrano mai smettere. Tutti a urlare "Bravo!", tutti a far fotografie, son tutti d'accordo: è il migliore che ci sia. L'elefante s'alza, scruta, poi saluta: proboscide e codino, si prepara per l'uscita. Trenino d'elefanti, sipario, pista vuota. Anche questa sera la sua recita è finita. Domani dal suo carrozzone vedrà il mondo correre e gli alberi nuotare liberi in immensi pascoli. Basta poco a un elefante ad aver voglia di vivere ed alla sera, col pennacchio, voglia di sorridere.

Le ore passano lente, la coltre cresce piano, coprendo l'elefante e lo sguardo suo lontano e quando il sole tornerà nel cielo scintillante, scompariranno entrambi: la neve e l'elefante.
