The Verve were a British alternative rock band from Wigan, England. Active from 1989 to 2009 (with a brief reunion in 2019), the group achieved international fame with their 1997 album *Urban Hymns*, which included the hits "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man". The band was characterized by a psychedelic and atmospheric sound, influenced by post-punk and classical music. Their musical style went through several phases, moving from more grunge-influenced sounds to pop melodies during their period of greatest success. The original lineup included Richard Ashcroft (vocals), Nick McCabe (guitar), Simon Jones (bass) and Peter Salisbury (drums). The Verve are considered one of the most important bands in the British alternative rock scene, with a significant influence on subsequent music.
