Sie ist schon schäbig, keine Frage, Sie war nie ein kostbares Stück, Doch mir bringt sie, wenn ich sie trage, So manche Erinn'rung zurück. Vor Jahren hab' ich diese Beute im Ausverkauf niedergestreckt. Und von diesem Tag an bis heute, hab' ich immer gerne dringesteckt.
Was haben wir zwei nicht zusammen in dieser Zeit alles erlebt, und um alle Kratzer und Schrammen, ist eine Geschichte gewebt. Sie war dabei als meine Schöne zum ersten Mal vor mir stand. Ich weiß, es verschlug mir die Töne, und dazu gehört allerhand! Und später, als ich Etikette und die Welt rings um uns zwei vergaß, da wurde sie für uns zum Bette, inmitten von Blumen und Gras.
Ich trug sie in guten Stunden, und wenn ich das Spiel verlor, sie hat sich für mich zerschunden und wärmte mich, wenn ich fror. Ich stand mit ihr im kalten Regen und zwischen Smokings ganz allein, in ihr schlug mir Beifall entgegen, in ihr schlief ich todmüde ein. Ich hab', und das ist nicht geschwindelt, wenn immer Not am Manne war, auf ihr auch zwei Söhne gewindelt, das macht ihren Wert unschätzbar!
Und werden Altkleider gesammelt, dann seh' ich sie abschätzend an: Die Jacke ist längst so vergammelt, daß man sie nicht verschenken kann. Ich hab' im Schrank eine fast neue, die geb' ich dafür gerne her. Dank dieser List, du alte treue, rette ich dich einmal mehr!
