Dieses Lied entstand kurz vor Weihnachten 1945 hinter den Stacheldrahtzäunen eines amerikanischen Kriegsgefangenen-Lagers unweit von Salzburg. Der Autor selbst zählte zu den tausenden hinter engmaschigem Stacheldraht Gefangenen und war mangels ausreichender Ernährung erkrankt in eine Lazarett-Baracke gebracht worden. Dort in dieser düsteren Stimmung kam ihm die Idee zu der Weise und zu den stillen Worten:
