Hij was twaalf, had rappe leden,
jongen uit de Hof van Eden.
Als hij lachte, lachten luidkeels
alle leeuweriken mee.
Met zijn blikkering van tanden,
met zijn marmerbleke handen
leek hij op een tere engel
uit een sierlijk bal masque.
Hij kon klaterhelder zingen
en zijn haar rook naar seringen.
Oh hij was een waterprins
die in zijn pak van goudlamee
was ontstegen aan de zee.
Zij was dertien, een gazelle,
en haar naam was Annabelle.
Annabelle noemden haar zowel
de hinde als het ree.
Met haar helderrode wangen,
met haar glinsterende spangen,
leek zij in haar gazen bruidsjurk
't meest nog op een toverfee.
Blauw waren haar vreemde ogen,
blauw maar zonder mededogen.
Oh ze was een kleine meermin
die maar net van lieverlee
was ontstegen aan de zee.
Samen in het ochtendgloren
wandelden ze langs het koren.
Mild en zonder ze te storen
scheen het zonlicht naar benee.
En onder de roze stralen
kuste hij haar lippen dralend
en hij zei haar wonderwoorden,
zelfs het gras luisterde mee.
Op het horen van die woorden
week voor hen gedwee het koren
en het lispelde: wees welkom,
en bood doorgang aan die twee
zoals eens de Rode Zee.
Toen hij, op geblaf van honden,
dagen later werd gevonden,
lag de blanke prins geschonden
in het koren zonder fee.
Met zijn dode grote ogen
keek hij roerloos naar omhoog en
langzaam ritselde zijn bloed nog
uit een gruwelijke snee.
Niemand wist meer te vertellen
hoezeer kleine Annabelle
had gehouden van haar engel
uit het sierlijk bal masque.
Maar nog altijd ruist de zee.
