Édith Piaf, pseudonimo di Édith Giovanna Gassion (Parigi, 19 dicembre 1915 ? Grasse, 11 ottobre 1963), è stata una cantante francese. È stata una grande interprete del filone realista (chanteuse réaliste). Nota anche come "Passerotto", come veniva amorevolmente chiamata (passerotto infatti nell'argot francese si dice piaf), ha deliziato le folle tra gli anni trenta e sessanta. Ma già ai suoi primi sette anni ha realizzato il suo primo passo verso la musica cantando per suo padre in strada, per qualche spicciolo, la folla la gradì... La sua voce, caratterizzata da mille sfumature, era in grado di passare improvvisamente da toni aspri e aggressivi a toni dolcissimi; inoltre sapeva far percepire in modo unico la gioia con il suono della sua voce. È la cantante che con le sue canzoni ha anticipato il senso di ribellione tipico dell'inquietudine che contraddistinse diversi intellettuali della rive gauche del tempo come: Juliette Greco, Roger Vadim, Boris Vian, Albert Camus ecc. In molti casi era lei stessa l'autrice dei testi delle canzoni che tanto magistralmente interpretava. La vita di Édith Piaf fu sfortunata e costellata da una miriade di fatti negativi: incidenti stradali, coma epatici, interventi chirurgici, delirium tremens e anche un tentativo di suicidio. In una delle sue ultime apparizioni pubbliche la si ricorda piccola e ricurva, con le mani deformate dall'artrite, e con radi capelli; solo la sua voce era inalterata e splendida come sempre. Porta il suo nome un asteroide della fascia principale, scoperto nel 1982: 3772 Piaf. È ricordata anche per un verso di una sua celebre canzone: « Non, rien de rien / Non, je ne regrette rien / Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait, ni le mal / Tout ça m'est bien égal »
