In oude kathedralen
van gotisch glas gebouwd
liggen dode kardinalen

in steen en brons en goud.

er neer zo grijs als lood
met de echo van verhalen

Zal ik blijven of verder gaan?
Ik trek mijn bonte jas met bellen aan,

In morgennevels groeien
uit kratermeren koud
suikerlelies die gaan bloeien
stijgend onder orgeltonen,
een klokkenspel van goud.
