Savatage è un gruppo musicale heavy metal statunitense formatosi a Tampa, Florida, nei primi anni '80. Il nucleo fondante era composto dai fratelli Jon Oliva (voce e tastiere) e Criss Oliva (chitarra), insieme al batterista Steve "Doc" Wacholz. La band guadagnò rapidamente una solida base di fan in Florida e nel 1983 pubblicò il suo album di debutto, *Sirens*. L'anno successivo, Savatage firmò con la Atlantic Records e nel 1985 uscì il loro album d'esordio per l'etichetta, *Power of the Night*, che segnò un punto di svolta nella loro carriera. Dopo il primo tour di rilievo, al gruppo si unì il bassista Johnny Lee Middleton alla fine del 1985, completando la formazione definitiva.
