Ein horrender Sturm bläst die Gräber zurecht, in den kahlen Löchern hören brabbelnde Gerippe eine schnurrende Säge auf und ab laufen. Als der Spielmann aus seiner versenkten Grube steigt, sieht er ein Kind auf einem morschen Hutschpferd hocken. Es sägt dem Gaul den Kopf ab und summt ein Schlaflied.
DAS SCHAUKELKIND (summt)
Macht die Säge 'siege-sage?,
macht die Wiege ?wiege-wage?.
Wiege-wage macht der Wind,
in der Wiege schläft ein Kind.
DER SPIELMANN
Tu die Äuglein zu, mein Kind,
denn draußen weht ein böser Wind.
Will das Kind nicht schlafen ein,
bläst er in das Bett hinein,
bläst uns alle Federn raus,
und kratzt dem Fratz die Augen aus!
BERTRAM, DER KNECHT
Es rappelt und sirrt, in dies Sägen verirrt,ein Kindlein - entflammt in sein Totengewand.
DER SPIELMANN (jammernd)
Ein Kind, ganz keck, am Pferdchen hockt's und sägt zu Teufels Tanz,
dem Gaul ein Leck, ganz mürrisch bockt's, in seinen dicken Wanst!
DER SPIELMANN (DIE BUCKLIGE)
Mein Kind, ganz dürr, dein Händchen sühnt den Teufel!
Es schnarcht sich laut dem Klepper in den Schlund.
DER SPIELMANN (singend)
Herbei, mein Kind!
Das Pferdchen wird matt von der Rumsägerei!
Der Buckel ganz blau, das Köpfchen geknickt!
DER SPIELMANN (DIE BUCKLIGE)
Mein Kind, ganz dürr, dein Händchen sühnt den Teufel!
Es schnarcht sich laut dem Klepper in den Schlund.
DAS SCHAUKELKIND (höhnisch)
Mein Pferdchen, dein Köpfchen ist weg?
Dein Köpfchen weg?
DIE SCHWARZEN PUPPEN (neugierig)
Wer reitet so schnell durch Nacht und Wind'

Hopp, mein Gaul, über Stock, über Stein, ohne Kopf, mein Gaul!
Dieser Wind macht uns böse und flennt, wenn er sich in der Kiste verrennt!
Spielmann, ich bin tot und ganz modrig und faul.
Wozu braucht dann den Kopf dieser Gaul' Dieses lebende, schaudernde Maul.

Dein Köpfchen ist weg!
Spielmann, sieh sein Maul, dieses darbende Maul!
Seine Wunde macht ihn erst zum Gaul, diesen sterbenden, schaukelnden Gaul!

Was sprichst du Kind, Gesindel'
Der Klepper hutscht geköpft hier im Dreck,
gab sein Leben für euch Kinder!
Lass uns seine mürbe Mähne kraulen!
Sein Gras in unseren leeren Mäulern kauen!
Hutschen gar zu zwei'n!
Ich schwing' mich auf ihn!
Kindlein, nein, du hutscht mir nicht allein!

Der Gaul wippt blind - hüpf vorwärts, Kind.
