Cantante, polistrumentista, autore, studioso delle tradizioni musicali del Mediterraneo, Fabrizio Piepoli ha studiato pianoforte e canto corale presso il Conservatorio ‘Nino Rota’ di Monopoli, canto gregoriano e improvvisazione. Dal 2021 insegna ‘Canto tradizionale’, ’Strumenti e canto delle tradizioni musicali extraeuropee’ e ‘Studio dei sistemi musicali delle culture tradizionali’ nel Triennio di Musiche Tradizionali ad indirizzo etno-musicologico presso il Conservatorio ‘Tito Schipa’ di Lecce. Formatosi intorno alla metà degli anni ’80 all’interno della scena rock new-wave ha parallelamente coltivato un interesse profondo per la musica antica e le tradizioni musicali, in particolar modo quelle dell'area mediterranea. Nella sua voce la ricercatezza sonora del pop d’avanguardia, i melismi delle tradizioni mediterranee e le eteree incursioni nel registro di controtenore si fondono con naturalezza. L’estensione, le nuance timbriche, il frequente ricorso alla tecnica del looping vocale sono completamente al servizio di un’espressività pulsante ed estatica. Negli anni ha collaborato con artisti del calibro di Raiz, Almamegretta, Planet Funk, Teresa De Sio, Eugenio Bennato, Lucilla Galeazzi, Mauro Pagani, Dario Fo, Ensemble Micrologus, Bobby Mc Ferrin, David Murray, Michel Godard, Roberto Ottaviano, Jamal Ouassini e Orchestra Arabo-andalusa di Tangeri, Mohssen Khasirosafar, Baba Sissoko e tanti altri. Suona stabilmente con La Cantiga de la Serena (con cui ha pubblicato La Cantiga de la Serena nel 2016, La Fortuna nel 2019, La Mar nel 2021) e nel progetto Ghibli, in duo con Nabil Bey. Nel 2017 è stato tenore solista nello “Stabat Mater” di Arvo Pärt nel lungo tour italiano del progetto La musica incontra – Corelli Chamber Orchestra diretta dal M° Manfredo Di Crescenzo. Ha collaborato in teatro con Giuseppe Cederna, Domenico Mongelli e Nuove Produzioni Spettacolari, Flavio Albanese e Compagnia del Sole, Marcello Praier, Totò Onnis. Ha suonato in importanti rassegne e prestigiosi teatri e luoghi in Italia e all’estero: Teatro Petruzzelli, Teatro San Carlo, Pantheon, Complesso del Vittoriano, Basilica di S. Eugenio, Sinagoga, Museo di Capodimonte, Castel del monte, Cattedrale S. Cetteo, Festival dei due mondi, Festival della Letteratura, Festival di Villa Ada, Time Zones, Musica in festa, Stadio della Vittoria, Mupa Palace of Arts. Dal 1998 al 2016 è stato la voce della formazione di world music Radicanto, con cui ha inciso numerosi dischi, partecipato a numerose tournée nazionali e internazionali, e composto colonne sonore per il cinema (La Casa delle donne, Il tramite, Mia figlia fa la madonna) e per la Rai (Tg3 Primo Piano, Terre da Musica, Lineablu, Mediterraneo). Nel 2006 è stato finalista con i Radicanto al ‘Premio De Andrè’ V edizione; nel 2007 Synpress 44, Via Landolfi 31, S. Martino Sannita (BN) Ph. 349/4352719 www.synpress44.com al ‘Premio Musicultura’ XVIII edizione; nel 2008 al Premio Tenco con Il disco ‘il mondo alla rovescia’ dei Radicanto (categoria: album in dialetto). Nel 2012 con Raiz e Radicanto è entrato nella prestigiosa World Music Europe Charts grazie all’album Casa (finalista Targhe Tenco dello stesso anno). Ha pubblicato nel 2011 Autumn Session, dedicato alla rilettura di alcune ballate della tradizione irlandese, scozzese e inglese, in una chiave ispirata al folk progressivo dei primi anni ’70; nel 2019 è stata la volta di Il Cedro e la Rosa, che mescola canti tradizionali del Mediterraneo con composizioni originali, utilizzando uno strumentario che comprende santur persiano, shruti box, pianoforte , chitarre, loop machines. Maresia è il suo terzo lavoro da solista.
