Fred était comme un équilibriste,
Un mec pas banal qui aimait les risques
Ses grands yeux noirs brillaient comme des opales,
Son regard rêveur avait une lueur fatale
Fred dans la vie n'avait qu'une passion, la trompette,
Et le cool jazz quand Miles attaque, ça lui donne des frissons,

Fred avait longtemps cherché un instrument à vent
Pour faire comme les grands
Un soir très tard il a déniché
Dans un bric-à-brac une trompette à trois sous en cuivre argenté

Sous ses coups car Fred n'entend plus rien du tout,
Si ce n'est le son cristallin de son instrument
Dans la salle de bains

Une nuit Fred a enfin trouvé un son pur,
Un son parfait sur la grille de ?I'm beginning to see the light?
Il s'est approché du perfect delight
Et c'est ce moment précis que Rose a choisi,
Pleine de furie et d'hystérie,
Pour frapper la porte de toutes ses forces
En hurlant comme une folle ?je te hais?
Fred au début n'a rien entendu, complètement absorbé
Dans son extase, mais au bout d'un moment les cris de rage
L'ont sérieusement importuné quoi? il y avait entre lui et le jazz,
Lui et Miles, lui et Clifford Brown,
Quelqu'un d'extrêmement bruyant,
Quelqu'un d'extrêmement gênant
Le sang lui montait à la tête, d'une main il a serré très fort sa trompette,
De l'autre il a ouvert la porte, elle a juste dit ?que le diable t'emporte?
Tout s'est passé à toute vitesse, il a frappé, elle s'est écroulée,
La trompette par terre était toute tordue et Fred s'est effondré,
Il avait tout perdu,
Toute une semaine il est resté prostré, pendant que Rose se décomposée

Puis un jour elle s'est comme réveillée de ce long cauchemar embrumé,

Fred maintenant est un grand trompettiste,
Qui joue toutes les nuits dans des clubs enfumés;
De temps en temps il a l'air un peu triste,
Mais sa tristesse le quitte dès qu'il peut jouer
