Im Janner 1926, kurz nach Babels Fruhstadium im Genesungsprozess trifft
Zacharias wahrend einer Zugreise suf einen schrulligen und verworrenen
alten Mann, der sich ihm als "Der Essayist" vorstellte. Der Mann hatte ihn
schon langere
Zeit beobachtet - starr sein Blick, zu grob seine Augen - und

eindeutigen Wink zur momentanen Geselligkeit. Der Literat, der sich in der
Tat wie ein Bettler in die Sitzpolsterung kauerte, erwies sich sehr bald
als augergewohnlicher Zuhorer und Mataphorist. Zacharias wirkte erst
verstort, der Essayist durchstrahlte seinen Wuchs, stoberte immerzu nach

anmutigues Angebot unterbreitet. "Horen Sie, Zacharias Kasakow, ich kenne
einen Ort und es ist einzige in diesem Land, an dem man sie Stille besiegt,
ohne sie storend empfunden zu haben. Es ist ein Flecken von Hain und
Wasserrauschen, nur klein ist die Flache des Humus, in der die Stille etwas
zahlt, grob genug jedoch, main Freund, um ein Schachbrett abzustellen!" Im
Spab einigen sich die beiden, dass der Essayist das Grundstuck "verkaufen"und daher preisgeben wurde, hatte Zacharias 2 Millionen Rubel in Gewahrsam.
Dann, noch wqahrend Zacharias in wohlverdienten Schlaf verfiel, verlasst
der Mann das Abteil (und damit den Zug). 4 Monate spatter erhalt Zacharias,
inzwischen politisch ambitioniert, einen versiegelten brief, er riss diesen
entzwei und: vernahm den Tod von Wassily Kalitenkov (der sich selbst gerne
als der "Essayist" preisgab). "Ich will es einen gewissen Zacharias
Kasakow, wohnhaft in Moskau, Kalininprospekt 89, ermoglichen, einen Platz
zu erben, fer mir selbst nicht gehort, doch auch niemanden sonst".
Zacharias - ergriffen von seinem Erbe - suchte nach dem Land, fand dort den
Grabstein des Essaysten und nutzte die Stille - emsig und entschlossen - um
als erster Schachspieler Russlands Paschas Schachlehre vollend umzusetzen.
