Qui siamo sepolti per sempre, e per noi il mondo si è fermato quel giorno. Qualcuno ci ha pianto, qualcuno ci ricorda ancora. Ma a pochi passi da qui, a pochi passi da dove, dicono gli altri, riposiamo in pace, le automobili sfrecciano sulle grandi strade asfaltate, i bambini irrequieti al finestrino di dietro, il canotto rosso o gli sci, sul tetto.
Qualcuno scorge, discreto dietro i pini, le siepi, mille croci bianche, un cimitero militare, pensa, quanti morti... poi via, un colpo d'acceleratore, verso il week-end.

Sulla mia croce non c'è scritto niente. Al mio corpo carbonizzato sotto un carro armato, nessuno ha saputo dare un nome. Esaminate le scarpe, unico elemento riconoscibile, mi hanno definito "Unidentified Britisch Soldier" soldatro inglese non identificato; invece facevo parte della Warmacht, il mio nome è Richard Bruher - Berlino; le scarpe, le mie erano rotte, le avevo rubate a un morto: dovevano solo tenermi i piedi al caldo. Invece, grazie a loro, eccomi qui, anch'io per sempre, assieme ai vincitori.

Il mio nome è Jan Casensky, un'alfa, un'omega, e due date, tra quelle date vent'anni. La guerra mi ha travolto sbattendomi dalla mia Polonia a quest'Italia che avevo sempre creduto piena di sole, di canti e di fiori e che ho visto in un terribile autunno pieno di pioggia e di fuoco. Sono morto un giorno, novembre, colpito da una bomba per caso: sono vissuto senza avere il tempo di capire, sono morto senza avere il tempo di accorgermene.

Charlie Wright è il mio nome, ma siccome ridevo sempre mi chiamavano "Smily". Sono nato sulle rive del Mississipi ed ero un povero negro trattato a calci e a sputi dai bianchi del mio paese. Ma un giorno un uomo bianco venuto da Washington mi ha detto "Basta, siamo tutti uguali, siamo tutti fratelli, quale che sia il colore della nostra pelle. Vieni con noi, fratello negro!". Io sono andato e ... ragazzi, era vero! Io viaggiavo con i bianchi, marciavo con i bianchi, ho avuto l'onore di morire con i bianchi... Io, Charlie Wright detto smily, povero negro nato sulle rive del Mississipi e morto sull'argine di un fossato senza nome, un giorno di marzo, in Italia.

Queste le nostre voci, che insieme a mille altre, gli alberi, i grilli, la luna sentono la notte. E un giorno le croci cadranno e si confonderanno con la terra, e con la terra si confonderanno le ossa che ancora non riposano in pace. Sui prati verranno i bambini e tra le tante domande dell'infanzia, forse, anche queste: "Papà, che cos'è la guerra?" E allora a spiegare che un tempo ma tanto, tanto tempo fa, gli uomini si... si ammazzavano, si schieravano gli uomini di una tribù, di una città, di uno stato, "Che cos'è uno stato?", o di un continente, di fronte agli uomini di un'altra tribù di un'altra città, di un altro stato, di un altro continente, e con i fucili, "Che cosa sono i fucili?", e con i cannoni "Che cosa sono i cannoni?", e con le bombe "Che cosa sono le bombe?", ... e, ... e si ammazzavano, e questa è la guerra, "Si... ma perché pap°, perché". E noi allora faremo silenzio e staremo attenti e forse allora sapremo anche noi, finalmente... perché!
