wo sich der erste Christenleichnam rührt.
Sie werden alle kommen und mit Bomben
aus Glut und Hitze um sich schmeißen.
In ein paar Stunden steht die Stadt in Brand.
Die Götter stehn in Positur und gleißen
und halten bunte Dias in der Hand.
Unter dem Titusbogen weiden deutsche Schafe
und die Cäsaren lassen es geschehn.
Statt aufzuwiegeln wie einst jener Sklave
wolln sie zerbröckeln und auf Marmor stehn.
Die grauen Päpste kauern auf St. Peter
und geifern ihren Segen auf die Stadt
und suchen Gott. Was solls, da oben steht er
und jammert, daß man ihn vergessen hat.
Er soll sich vorsehn, daß ihn jene Pferde,
die seit Jahrtausenden die Sonne ziehn,
nicht niedertrampeln. Denn schon glüht die Erde
und alle grellen Lichter werden fliehn
und ins Inferno tauchen. Die Paläste
verlieren ihre Schatten und verstummen.
Die Zeit der Katzen kommt und die der Feste,
die greisen Dichter steigen aus den Niederungen.
Und endlich kann sich Rom besaufen
die Brüste prall und voll von Wein.
Gelächter fangen an zu laufen
und schwellen an und brechen in dich ein.
Und du ertrinkst und taumelst durch die Gassen,
die Häuser flattern auf, du rennst vorbei,
du willst die ganze Stadt umfassen -
Rom hat dich endlich. Nie mehr bist du frei.
